HISTORY ;;
Reuben comes of a noble family, though only a recently-turned noble family; his Grandfather had once been a merchant who had gained enough power to become one of Kanemoria's Councilors, though his father had chose not to follow in that path, preferring the life of a merchant to the life of a politician, and intended to groom his own children in the same way. And it worked, for his first two children, who were content with their status as minor nobles but had no intention of doing anything political about it, instead studying and trading under their father's direction. And then Reuben came along.
He was always a curious child, and very different from his siblings. While they were out and about and only concerned with making more money and enjoying the finer things in life, he was more curious about the world around him, the people in it, and how it all came together. He was bored by what they did, spending his childhood years going out on the streets, sometimes sneaking down to the lower city just to watch the people and how differently they operated. And he was fascinated.
When he turned ten he began spending time with his grandfather, who at that point was frustrated with his family's lack of political ambition, though Reuben was a surprisingly captive audience, and that was all he needed. Soon his Grandfather had opened his eyes (and ears) to a new world of poltics, and there really was no turning back once that door was opened.
It couldn't be denied that he had the makings of a good politician. With his youth, charm, and his grandfather's advice, he was quick to gain popularity. Confidence was armor. Honor was strength. Intelligence was necessary. Everything else was charisma. He had a voice that people wanted to hear, a smile that they liked to see.
High Prince Reston was... an interesting adversary, of sorts. Unfortunately, his attempt at making friends with the prince was awkward at best, and things didn't become much better between them once he met the prince's twin sister, Emerella, who was decidedly beautiful, and enjoyed his company. Though he had been a bit of a ladies man before he decided to start courting her (and only her). Which she understood; how could any other woman not have been attracted to him, after all?
Still, dating the princess certainly was yet another thing to attract public attention, and there was little to be done about the rumors, though most things that were said about the pair were actually quite positive. Except from perhaps Reston's point of view; the prince was not very pleased about the arrangement, and his disapproval, naturally, was used as an encouragement of sorts. They married at twenty-two, and a few years later, Julian was born, followed by Tristel a few years later. His career didn't leave him too much time to be a father, though he did attempt as best as he could to form relationships with his children, though ended up closer to Julian as a result.
Things were looking good. The public continued to love him (though there were times when he did wonder how much longer it would last, considering the rapid ups and downs of Kanemoria's system; though his wife assured him that he was meant to be successful), but he was best not to show that in his public face; any cracks in that armor could be percieved as weakness, after all.
The death of the King was a shock; Reuben had gotten along quite well with him, (as well he should have, considering that he had married into the Royal family as it was). While Reuben knew that the long standing contest between himself and Reston would be put to the test at some point, none quite forsaw it as being so soon. The elections went by in a bit of a blur; mostly he remembers Emerella's sobbing at night and the defeated, empty look that Reston had in his eyes at the last. But the role of king came with ease to him, like many things in his life and career.
And life was good, more or less.
Until two years later. While King Reuben was known for being lucky, in more ways than one, the way his life seemed to fall into place for him aside, he also was able to avoid possible death or severe injury, even if it was taking a step to the side when someone was aiming an arrow at him, being stronger than his assailants... or not drinking a glass of poison meant for him. It was a terrible day when at a great feast, his wife took the first sip of wine... and died in his arms. He could do nothing to bring back his wife, and this hit him very hard. Of course, it did not do anything for his relationship with Reston, who blamed him outright for negligence, and the tensions between them mounted.
Reuben would not lose face. He was grieving, but he had to still be the King that the people elected. And this was something that he would continue to do well, even as he moved past it. The change in him was noticed, of course, but after some long years he was able to regain his usual level of success. He was still lucky, of course; and Julian seemed to be turning out the same way, if the reports that he was hearing about the boy's near run ins with death were true. Though he noticed an odd irony, in how Julian and Christopher got along so well, as opposed to his situation with Reston. Though he can only hope that things will improve eventually.
With the current devasation in Norey leaving the entire council a bit shaken, Reuben is determined to find a way to set things to rights. It has kept him busy for months on end, and there seems no end to the problems in sight. Though it is not as if that will keep him from finding a way to succeed.
PERSONALITY ;;
As a youth, Reuben was a shining star in the world of politics.
Women found him irresitable (and still do, a King still has needs after all, even if widowed), and he was always rather charismatic. Of course, he does have his flaws. With charisma comes arrogance, whether or not it is intentional, especially in youth, though he has certainly learned to keep that private. He is also quite talented and ambitious, his skills certainly enough to displace a High Prince and becoming a King himself, so naturally he has earned the air of a King, with the respect that goes with it.
He has many accomplishments behind him, making him a successful ruler. He is someone who likes to get things started, though he also needs to exercise self-control, so that he keeps himself in check. Again, something that has come with age.
He is generally quite easy-going and good natured, and is often smiling, unless he is quite busy with serious matters. He enjoys being amused.
APPEARANCE ;;
The King of Kanemoria is fairly tall, with long brown hair and piercing eyes. Reuben is quite good looking and charming, and still strong, even at his age; there simply must be something in the Kanemorian water. Like his sons, he also sports a pair of glasses, and is usually smiling.
